Every control panel has one hidden failure that engineers only notice after tooling is paid for: the light leaks. A keypad that glows beautifully in the lab turns into a row of pale squares on a production unit, because the LED sits on the top side of the board and throws half its output sideways into the housing instead of up through the legend.
The fix is not a brighter LED. It is a different mounting direction — and that is exactly what the 6028 RGB reverse mount LED is built for. The package sits on the back of the PCB and shines through a cut-out, so the light arrives at the legend from below, straight up, with nothing in the way.
The Problem With Top-Mount LEDs On Backlit Panels
Put an ordinary top-mount SMD LED behind a membrane switch or a moulded key and three things go wrong at once. The package height pushes the overlay up, so the panel no longer sits flush. The side emission of the epoxy body creates hot spots at the edges of the cut-out. And because the LED sits on the component side, the PCB layout has to route the LED traces around the switch contacts, which usually costs a layer.
A reverse mount part inverts that geometry. The body is recessed into a hole in the board, the emitting face looks through it, and the panel height is set by the PCB thickness instead of the LED. In a 3.2 / 6.0 × 2.8 × 1.9 mm outline, the 6028 RGB keeps a familiar 3528-style footprint, so existing footprints are easy to migrate.

Reverse Mount vs Top Mount: What Changes In The Design
| Design item | Top mount | 6028 reverse mount |
|---|---|---|
| Panel stand-off | 1.9 mm package height | Set by PCB thickness |
| Light bleed | Side glow at cut-out edges | Emission confined by the hole |
| Routing | Traces share the legend side | LED copper moves to the back |
Buyer check: ask for the hole diameter and the tolerance on the package before approving a sample. A reverse mount part is only as good as the routing accuracy of the PCB it is pressed into — 0.1 mm of slop shows up as a bright ring around the key.
Where To Source This Package
Dongguan Lanjin Optoelectronics Co., Ltd. has manufactured SMD LEDs, through-hole LEDs, LED displays and LED PCB assemblies since 2005 from a 2,500 m² anti-static workshop, holding ISO9001:2015 plus two national invention patents and twelve utility model patents. For reverse-mount panel projects the useful part is not only the reel: wavelength and intensity binning to the customer’s legend colour, 2,000-piece reels for pilot builds, and PCB assembly on the same site, so a brightness complaint and a corrected lot stay inside one loop.
Working on a backlit panel or a full-colour keypad? Send over the panel thickness, legend colour and drive current — the 6028 RGB can be matched to the tooling you already have instead of forcing a redesign.
